How Far Would You Travel For a Hair Appointment? Sunday School Brings "The Hair Appointment” from NYC to London This Weekend!

In collaboration with Okay Africa, Creative Agency, Sunday School, has curated a stunning collection of portraits, showcasing the black hair styling experience. With images taken in a home, Alima's Hair Salon and Slayed in Braids in Brownsville, Brooklyn - New York, Sunday School Creative Director Josef Adamu’s beautiful collection of images strikingly displays the diversity of black hair.

The styling of black hair is more than just a process, it’s nostalgic and very much, a lifestyle. Bantu knots, Senegalese twists, box braids and more represent culture, femininity, and community, and the hair salon procedure is a universal experience for the black women that is often one of our initial demonstrations of sisterhood.

Josef Adamu shares some of the creative process with Okay Africa, "we captured an intimate hair braiding session from a family home, displaying the location flexibility of hair braiding and the emotions that come with it. As a team, we felt it was essential to show children as key components to the process. Whether they're physically learning the hair braiding routines, running around the shop, or simply getting their hair done, they add a strong element to the environment as a whole."

The installation included a highly-detailed hair salon set, a gallery display, and over 300 people! Sunday School used this opportunity to actualise an important conversation into an immersive installation and will now be able to experience in London!
